Why 3d scan is better than at-home impressions?

What is 3D scanning?

A 3D scan is a three-dimensional intraoral scan of teeth. While plaster models are becoming a relic of the past, 3D model imaging is taking over the dental world. 3D scan takes a series of photographs of the patient's upper and lower jaw (tens of photographs per minute), combining them into a single digital 3D model. The model is displayed on a computer screen, allowing the dentist to assess the condition of the entire jaw and each tooth individually.

How is a 3D dental scan performed?

The scanning procedure is as simple, painless and fast as possible. It takes only 2-5 minutes to scan the teeth of the upper and lower jaw.

During the procedure, the doctor uses an intraoral scanner with a special attachment, which approaches each tooth step by step for photographing. At the same time, the images are displayed on the monitor screen and converted into a three-dimensional model online.

What exactly are the benefits of 3D scanning for the patient?
  1. Comfort. You will not have a gag reflex.
  2. Accuracy. The scanning error is almost impossible.
  3. Speed. The entire scanning process takes no more than 2-3 minutes, and the finished three-dimensional model is sent to the dental laboratory immediately.
  4. Ease of perception. Digital photographs can be enlarged and reduced online, viewed from any angle. It is convenient to send images to other doctors and technicians.
  5. Durability of storage. The results of 3D scanning of the oral cavity can be stored forever in their original form (unlike, for example, plaster models). Therefore, for example, after orthodontic treatment, you can clearly compare “before and after”.

There are no contraindications for implementation.

67% of foreign studies show that digital impressions obtained using digital scanners are more accurate (in microns) compared to conventional impressions.
